Dryopteris affinis - Golden Scale Male Fern RHS AGM

Dryopteris affinis – Scaly Male Fern

Dryopteris affinis, commonly known as the Scaly Male Fern or Golden Shield Fern, is a magnificent, robust semi-evergreen fern native to Ireland. Its impressive arching fronds emerge a fresh golden-green in spring, gradually deepening to rich green. The stems are densely covered in distinctive golden-brown scales, giving this handsome fern its name.

Growing approximately 100cm tall and 50–100cm wide, this fern thrives in partial to full shade. Adaptable to acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions, it tolerates dry shade once established and can also grow in sunshine where sufficient moisture is available.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, naturalistic planting and beneath mature trees, Dryopteris affinis provides impressive architectural structure and attractive foliage throughout much of the year. A particularly reliable, low-maintenance fern for Irish gardens.

Irish native fern. Semi-evergreen. RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
