Doodia media – Common Rasp Fern

Doodia media (syn. Blechnum medium), commonly known as the Rasp Fern or Hacksaw Fern, is an unusual evergreen fern native to Australia and New Zealand. Its striking young fronds emerge in beautiful shades of pink, copper and reddish-bronze, gradually maturing to deep green. The narrow, arching fronds have distinctly toothed edges and a slightly rough, leathery texture, giving this attractive fern its common name.

Growing approximately 30–50cm tall and spreading 50–100cm wide over time, this slowly spreading fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

An excellent choice for sheltered woodland gardens, shady borders and containers, Doodia media provides year-round foliage and particularly attractive seasonal colour. Best suited to mild coastal gardens in Ireland, it benefits from winter protection in colder areas, it's hardy to about -7°C.
