Disporum longistylum ‘Green Giant’ – Giant Fairy Bells

Disporum longistylum ‘Green Giant’ (syn. Disporum cantoniense ‘Green Giant’) is a magnificent architectural woodland perennial, prized for its tall, bamboo-like stems and elegant, glossy green foliage. Emerging in spring with attractive purple-bronze tinges, its upright, arching stems carry deeply veined, lance-shaped leaves and clusters of delicate creamy-yellow to greenish-white, hanging bell-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. These are followed by ornamental berries that mature to glossy black in autumn.

Growing approximately 1.5–3m tall and 60–100cm wide in favourable conditions, this vigorous, clump-forming perennial creates an impressive vertical accent in woodland gardens and larger shady borders. Grow in partial or dappled shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

Semi-evergreen, ‘Green Giant’ is exceptionally effective alongside ferns, hostas and other woodland plants.
