Cyrtomium falcatum, commonly known as the Japanese holly fern, is a robust, evergreen fern with a touch of architectural elegance. It typically grows to 60–90 cm tall, forming neat, upright clumps of shiny, dark green, holly-like fronds that are stiff yet gracefully arching, giving a formal but friendly look to shady corners.

It thrives in partial to full shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and tolerates cooler climates better than many other ferns. Once established, it’s low-maintenance and resistant to deer and rabbits, making it a reliable choice for woodland gardens or sheltered borders.

Interesting fact: Cyrtomium falcatum gets its name from its sickle-shaped fronds (falcatum meaning “curved like a sickle”), and it’s prized not just for its hardiness but also for its ability to look polished and evergreen year-round — a fern that never forgets to dress for the occasion.
