Convallaria majalis – Lily of the Valley

Convallaria majalis, commonly known as Lily of the Valley, is a charming deciduous woodland perennial, prized for its delicate sprays of intensely fragrant, pure white, bell-shaped flowers that appear in April and May. The nodding flowers are held above attractive, broad, fresh green leaves and are occasionally followed by bright red berries.

Growing approximately 15–25cm tall and spreading 30–50cm, this hardy, rhizomatous perennial gradually forms a dense carpet, making it an excellent ground-cover plant for shade.

Grow in partial to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, naturalising beneath trees and shrubs and fragrant spring planting, it is particularly attractive beside paths where its beautiful scent can be enjoyed.

RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM): Yes.

RHS hardiness: H7 (below -20°C).
