A fabulous evergreen fern from South Africa and Madagascar, with large evergreen fronds than can reach 60 - 80cm in length. It is not a true tree fern, but it develops a trunk up to a metre high with a crown, other fern crowns will grow at the base forming an incredibly attractive colony. Grow this in partial or full shade to add a tropical feel to the border. It's not fussy about soil, but does benefit from an annual leaf mould mulch.

Not fully hardy, it copes with temperatures to -5 centigrade. If the trunk dies off then new plants should grow from the base. In cold areas it suits containers very well, it doesn't get too large and can be realistically moved under cover if needed!

In conclusion this is a gem for the warmer, sheltered locations (protect in cold winters). For colder areas it makes a spectacular container plant and does well in the shady part of a conservatory. It also makes a great houseplant!
