Blechnum spicant RHS AGM -Deer Fern

Blechnum spicant (Hard Fern) – RHS AGM

A distinctive, hardy evergreen fern native to Ireland and Britain, admired for its elegant, dark green foliage and unusual growth habit. The narrow, glossy, ladder-like fronds form a neat, spreading rosette, while taller, upright fertile fronds emerge from the centre, creating an attractive contrast in height and texture.

Growing approximately 30–50cm tall with a similar spread, Blechnum spicant thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, acidic soil. Particularly well suited to damp woodland gardens, shaded banks, stream edges and naturalistic planting.

An excellent native Irish fern for year-round interest, combining beautifully with hostas, primulas and other moisture-loving woodland plants.

Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.
