Blechnum gibbum Dwarf Tree Fern RHS AGM 9cm

Blechnum gibbum, often known as the miniature tree fern or silver fern, is a compact, tropical-looking beauty that brings instant lushness to any shaded corner. Reaching around 60–90 cm tall, it forms a tidy rosette of upright, arching fronds that gradually create a short, trunk-like base.

Its fronds are a rich, glossy mid-green, with new growth sometimes flushed in softer tones. The overall effect is impeccably neat, architectural, and just a little smug about looking so exotic without needing to be gigantic.

It thrives in partial shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and appreciates warmth, humidity, and protection from frost. In cooler climates, it’s happiest in a conservatory, greenhouse, or a sheltered, frost-free outdoor nook.

Interesting fact: Despite its modest size, Blechnum gibbum can live for decades, slowly building its miniature trunk.
