Athyrium otophorum ‘Okanum’ – Eared Lady Fern

Athyrium otophorum ‘Okanum’ is a deciduous fern, prized for its unusual foliage and contrasting burgundy-red stems. Finely divided fronds emerge in spring in shades of pale yellow-green, gradually maturing to soft green. The dark purple-red midribs and stems give this distinctive Japanese fern exceptional ornamental appeal.

Growing approximately 50–80cm tall and 40–50cm wide, this clump-forming, shade-loving fern thrives in partial to full shade. It prefers moist, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral. Shelter from strong sunlight, drying winds and prolonged drought encourages healthy growth.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, fern collections and large containers, ‘Okanum’ brings delicate texture and subtle colour to shaded planting. Particularly attractive alongside hostas, brunneras, epimediums and other shade-loving perennials.

RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
