Athyrium niponicum ‘Burgundy Lace’ – Japanese Painted Fern

Athyrium niponicum ‘Burgundy Lace’ is a spectacular deciduous ornamental fern, prized for its beautifully coloured, finely divided fronds that emerge in rich shades of burgundy, purple and pink, highlighted with metallic silver. As the season progresses, the foliage develops silvery-green tones while retaining contrasting wine-red veins, creating a wonderful tapestry of colour in shady gardens.

Forming a graceful, spreading clump approximately 30–45cm tall and 40–60cm wide, this compact fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. Protect from hot afternoon sun and prolonged dryness to maintain its delicate foliage.
