Athyrium filix-femina ‘Victoriae’ – Queen Victoria Lady Fern

Athyrium filix-femina ‘Victoriae’ is an extraordinary deciduous ornamental fern, admired for its delicate, architectural foliage and unusual Victorian heritage. Its slender, finely divided green fronds have a distinctive criss-cross arrangement, with the pinnae forming tiny X-shaped patterns and their tips elegantly forked into miniature tassels.

Forming a graceful clump approximately 60–90cm tall and 60–90cm wide, this unusual lady fern brings intricate texture and movement to woodland gardens and shaded borders. It thrives in partial to full shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, ideally neutral to slightly acidic.

‘Victoriae’ is an excellent choice for fern collections, woodland planting, sheltered shady borders and planting alongside hostas and other shade-loving perennials.

Also known as the 'Queen of Green'. Discovered in 1861 by James Cosh on the Buchanan Estate, Stirlingshire.
