Athyrium filix-femina – Lady Fern

Athyrium filix-femina, commonly known as the lady fern, is a hardy, native Irish fern with soft, finely divided, fresh-green fronds that arch gracefully from an upright clump. Growing approximately 60–100cm tall and 50–100cm wide, this deciduous fern brings delicate texture to shady borders, woodland gardens and planting beneath trees and shrubs.

Grow in partial or full shade, in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably acidic to neutral. Shelter from drying winds and keep watered during dry spells. Its elegant foliage complements hostas, brunneras and other woodland perennials, dying back in winter before fresh fronds unfurl in spring. Hardiness: RHS H6, approximately −20°C to −15°C.
