Asplenium trichomanes – Maidenhair Spleenwort

Asplenium trichomanes, commonly known as Maidenhair Spleenwort, is a charming, compact evergreen fern native to Ireland. Its delicate, narrow fronds feature small, rounded, deep green leaflets arranged along distinctive wiry, almost black stems, forming neat, arching tufts that remain attractive throughout the year.

Growing approximately 10–20cm tall and 15–25cm wide, this exceptionally hardy fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Naturally found growing in crevices of limestone rocks and old stone walls, it appreciates good drainage and can tolerate occasional dryness once established.

An excellent choice for shady rock gardens, stone walls, containers and small woodland gardens, Maidenhair Spleenwort brings delicate texture and year-round greenery to even the smallest spaces.

Irish native fern. RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
