Asplenium trichomanes (Maidenhair Spleenwort)
Evergreen native. Deserved recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Delicate but determined, Asplenium trichomanes is the little fern that could. With slender, arching fronds lined with neat, rounded leaflets and wiry black stems, it brings a touch of refined woodland magic to the tiniest cracks and crevices.
Reaching just 10–20cm tall, it’s perfect for rock walls, shady nooks, and container edges—basically anywhere a dainty green touch is needed. Thrives in part to full shade with moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Despite its elegant looks, it’s surprisingly hardy and low-maintenance. Think of it as the ballerina of the fern world: graceful, poised, and quietly unstoppable.
