Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart’s Tongue Fern)
Sleek, shiny, and just a little bit quirky, the native Asplenium scolopendrium struts into the shade garden with strappy, tongue-shaped fronds that look like nature’s own green ribbons. No fluff, no frill—just bold, evergreen attitude.
Reaching 30–60cm tall and wide, it forms a tidy rosette that thrives in part to full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, but also suited for dry shade once established. It will grow almost anywhere, including limey soils. Low-maintenance and surprisingly sculptural, it’s the fern that says, “Why blend in when you can stand out?” Perfect for shady borders, rock gardens, or containers.
Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM)
