Asarum splendens – Chinese Wild Ginger

Asarum splendens, commonly known as Chinese Wild Ginger, is a beautiful semi-evergreen woodland perennial, prized for its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves, richly coloured deep green and dramatically marbled with shimmering silver markings. In spring, unusual dark chocolate-purple, cup-shaped flowers with creamy-white markings appear close to the ground, often partially concealed beneath the foliage. Growing approximately 10–15cm tall and spreading 30–50cm, this rhizomatous perennial gradually forms an attractive carpet, providing exceptional foliage interest in shaded areas. Grow in partial to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably acidic to neutral. An outstanding choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, evergreen-style ground cover, containers and planting beneath trees and shrubs, Asarum splendens combines beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade-loving plants.
