Anisocampium sheareri – Merlot Fern

Anisocampium sheareri (syn. Athyrium sheareri) is an unusual and elegant deciduous fern, prized for its distinctive wine-red stems and contrasting foliage. Broad, rich green lower fronds are complemented by taller, finely divided fronds, often flushed with attractive burgundy tones.

Growing approximately 45–50cm tall and 45–50cm wide, this hardy, clump-forming fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, ideally neutral to slightly acidic. A sheltered position is recommended, particularly during winter.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders and containers, this striking Asian fern adds beautiful colour, texture and architectural interest alongside hostas and other shade-loving plants.
