Aegonychon purpurocaeruleum, commonly known as Purple Gromwell or Blue Gromwell, is an unusual hardy perennial prized for its charming colour-changing flowers. The tubular blooms open reddish-purple before developing into intense gentian-blue, appearing from spring into early summer, above narrow green foliage. This spreading plant reaches approximately 30–50cm in height and can spread to around 1m, making it useful for naturalistic planting, woodland gardens and areas where a relaxed groundcover effect is wanted.

Grow Aegonychon purpurocaeruleum in sun or partial shade in light, well-drained soil; it is particularly suited to chalky or alkaline soils and can tolerate relatively dry conditions once established. Also known as Lithospermum purpurocaeruleum and Buglossoides purpurocaerulea, this distinctive blue-flowering perennial is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly, naturalistic and woodland-style gardens.
