Adiantum venustum – Himalayan Maidenhair Fern
Adiantum venustum, commonly known as the Himalayan Maidenhair Fern, is a beautiful, hardy, semi-evergreen fern with delicate, fan-shaped green leaflets carried on slender, glossy black stems. New fronds emerge with a soft pinkish-bronze tint before maturing to fresh green, often developing warm rusty tones in autumn.
Growing approximately 15–30 cm high and spreading 50–90 cm, this elegant fern gradually forms a graceful, finely textured carpet. Unlike many maidenhair ferns, it is exceptionally cold-hardy and thrives outdoors in Irish gardens.
Preferring partial to full shade and moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, it is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, rockeries, underplanting shrubs and naturalistic ground cover. Its light, airy foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas, epimediums and other shade-loving perennials. Almost evergreen in mild winters.
Hardiness: RHS H7 (below −20°C).
RHS AGM: Award of Garden Merit.
